Arhoolie Gatefold Double LP
Uncle John Patterson

Project Brief

The project was to create a double LP gatefold for an artist showcased by Arhoolie Records in a form that breaks the stereotypical gatefold covers and appeals to a larger audience.

Concept

Arhoolie was one of the most important independent labels documenting American regional music, often in it’s original context in the field. Uncle John Patterson, a banjo player from Georgia, lacked the opportunity to gain more fame due to his geographic isolation and lack of means to travel farther than the local radio channels. The inclusion of various radio dials forced connection into the geographic imagery portrays the expansion of his career and the impact he had solely from airing on the radio. Each gatefold includes an insert explaining the history of Arhoolie and the genre of music of the artist.
